Geocache Description:

A quick little park and grab.

Standing at GZ and facing north-east-ish, one can see the beautiful city of gold skyline. Egoli. The first thing you will see, on the left of the skyline, is the impressive Brixton Tower. Sentech Tower, also known as and originally called the Brixton Tower or Albert Hertzog Tower, is a 237m concrete tower in the suburb of Brixton. The Sentech Tower's construction commenced in 1961 and was completed in 1962. Upon completion, the Sentech Tower was the tallest man-made structure in Africa until it was overtaken by the Hillbrow Tower. The Sentech Tower is a vertical cantilever structure, the shaft of which is made of reinforced concrete. On windy days, the tower has been known to lean up to 2m as measured from its uppermost mast. In addition, the tower was built to withstand winds of 186 km/h and gusts of up to 200 km/h. The tower's foundation is circular, possessing a diameter of 26 m and it is 6m wide and 2 m deep. The tower's full height is 237m.

The second tower which is visible away to the right is the Hillbrow Tower located in the suburb of Hillbrow. At 269m it was the tallest structure and tower in Africa for 40 years, and it was also the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere until 1978. Construction of the tower began in June 1968 and was completed three years later, in April 1971. Construction cost 2 million Rand. The tower was initially known as the JG Strijdom Tower, after JG Strijdom, South African Prime Minister from 1954 to 1958.

The third well known building visible to the right of the Hillbrow Tower, is the iconic (or notorious) Ponte City. Ponte City is a skyscraper in the Berea neighbourhood of Johannesburg. It was built in 1975 to a height of 173m, making it the tallest residential skyscraper in Africa. The 55 story building is cylindrical, with an open center allowing additional light into the apartments. The center space is known as "the core" and rises above an uneven rock floor. When built, Ponte City was seen as an extremely desirable address due to its views over all of Johannesburg and its surroundings. The neon sign on top of the building is the largest sign in the southern hemisphere.

These are only three of the tall buildings that make up the beautiful city skyline of Johannesburg.

As this area can be very, very quiet, except when there is a game or a music show on, we would advise caution at night.
