This morning I awoke to the news of Muhammad Ali's passing. Like the tree, whose remains this cache is placed near, he was a giant of his era.
As a young man I didn't appreciate him for his humanity, I saw only the brash exterior of an athlete. A gifted athlete who wanted everyone to know how gifted he truly was - and he was very much so.
As the years passed I learned a great deal more about the man and the struggles he faced. They were not my struggles, so I had little perspective. Reading of his charity, kindness and spirit I moved from disdain to admiration.
Now he, too, belongs to the ages.
The trail is in the western end of Memorial Park, use the Loma Mar Redwoods pullout. There is room for a few vehicles at the trailhead. Poison Oak is along some trails, but shouldn't be a problem at the cache. It is an easy walk in the redwoods along cuttings made long ago.
