Belonging to the British Commonwealth, this is the day that New Zealand, and some other countries, celebrates the "official birthday" of the reigning monarch. It does not fall on the actual birthday of the monarch.
The "fficial birthday" of the Queen is currently celebrated on the first Monday in June and is a public holiday. In other countries within the Commonwealth, it may fall on the second Monday in June, like Australia, or at other times. In the UK, the celebration can be held on any of the second, third or fourth Saturday of June and it is not even a public holiday.
The reason for holding the "official birthday" of the monarch in June is purely the weather. In the northern hemisphere, June falls at the beginning of summer when the weather is settled and pleasing. Thus when the pageantry for the celebrations is commenced, the weather is generally kind to them and celebrations are more enjoyable. As the weather in New Zealand is not as bad as the weather in the English winter, there has been no reason to change the general time of the celebration.
