How long does money last?

The amount of wear and tear that is put on a bill depends on its denomination. Because we more often use smaller bills they of course wear out faster than the larger bills. More than 90% of the new bills the Federal Reserve makes every year are to replace bills already in ciruclation. In 2012 the Federal Reserve shredded more than seven thousand tons of retiered money. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing actually sells this shredded money by the bag, each bag contains $10,000 worth of shredded notes.
