L'ospedale psichiatrico cittadino viene inaugurato a Trieste nel 1908, 40 edifici in 22 ettari circondati da mura di cinta. Negli anni Settanta il direttore del manicomio Franco Basaglia dà inizio ad una rivoluzione di portata internazionale nel campo della psichiatria: l’ospedale e il parco vengono aperti alla città, i malati sono liberi di uscire ed i cittadini di entrare. Per i malati comincia la riconquista dei propri diritti personali e sociali, primo fra tutti la libertà.
Marco Cavallo è una macchina teatrale di legno e cartapesta, dal colore azzurro: un’opera collettiva realizzata nel 1973 dentro il manicomio. S’ispira a un cavallo in carne ed ossa, adibito al trasporto della biancheria nell’ospedale psichiatrico, che fu salvato dal macello. Il 25 febbraio 1973 Marco Cavallo venne portato fuori dal manicomio seguito da un corteo di pazienti, infermieri e artisti per attraversare la città. Divenne il simbolo della volontà di liberare i malati di mente da una psichiatria antiquata, fondata sulla reclusione, contro la quale Basaglia si batté fino alla legge del 1978, che sancì la chiusura dei manicomi.
Oggi il parco e i suoi edifici che sono stati in parte ristrutturati, ospitano eventi culturali, attività imprenditoriali, creative e di assistenza sociale. All'interno del parco è presente anche uno fra i 10 roseti più belli d'Europa con le sue 3000 specie diverse fra le oltre 6000 piante presenti.

The psychiatric hospital was opened in Trieste in 1908, 40 buildings in 22 hectares surrounded by retaining walls. In the seventies the director of the asylum Franco Basaglia begins an international revolution in the psychiatry world: the hospital and the park are open to the city, patients are free to get out and citizens are free to get in. For the patients begins the reconquest of their personal and social rights, first of all the freedom.
Marco Cavallo is a blue wooden theater machine: joint work created in 1973 in the mental hospital. Inspired by a horse for the transport of linen in the psychiatric hospital, who was saved from the slaughterhouse. The February 25, 1973 Marco Cavallo was brought out of the asylum followed by a procession of patients, nurses and artists to cross the city. It became a symbol of the will to free the mentally ill from an old psychiatry, based on imprisonment, against which Basaglia fought until the law of 1978, which marked the closing of mental hospitals.
Today the park and its buildings host cultural events, business, creative and social care activities. Inside the park there is also one of the 10 most beautiful rose gardens in Europe with its 3000 different species of the more than 6000 plants present.
