Geocache Description:

A simple cache and dash in the beautiful countryside of Draethen. A small trinket has been left for FTF.

This is a lovely cache that can be done quickly or as part of a walk around Coed Cae Ruperra. Visitors to the area may use the parking area near the site of the cache as a starting point of a half hour (approx.) walk to look at the remains of Ruperra Castle. Ruperra Castle is a Grade II* Listed Building and also a Scheduled Ancient Monument, although its ruins today only hint at it's past significance. It was built in 1626 by Sir Thomas Morgan, who was Steward to the Earl of Pembroke, and is in reality a mansion built in a mock castle style rather than a functional castle. Among its famous visitors include King Charles I, who spent 2 nights there not long after the Battle of Naseby. The family passed down the Morgan family who lived there for many generations, and was the birthplace of Godfrey Charles Morgan, 2nd Baron 1st Viscount Tredegar. Morgan went on to become a Captain of the 17th Lancers during the Charge of the Light Brigade. Over the generations Ruperra Mansion fell in to disrepair, and was used by the British Army during WWII.
