Geocache Description:

This is the tenth cache of a series called DinoCaches. I like dinosaurs. Each cache should have some sort of very cheaply made plastic dinosaur around it. The dinosaur from this cache is a Torosaurus, Tim's cousin. His name is Terry. He likes to be outside.

Please leave the container exactly as you found it.

  • Torosaurus was a herbivore (plant-eater) that lived in the late Cretaceous, about 70 to 65 million years ago, and was one of the dinosaurs that died out in the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction 65 million years ago.

  • Torosaurus was up to 25 feet (7.7 meters) long and 7 feet (2 meters) tall, weighed around 4 tons, and in many ways resembled its more familiar relative, Triceratops (see Tim, DinoCache #1).

  • Torosaurus had one of the largest skulls of any land animal known, reaching up to 8½ feet (2.6 meters) in length.

  • Torosaurus was named by the famous American fossil-hunter Othniel C. Marsh in 1891. Its name means "pierced lizard".

  • It had a large, bony neck frill, a short horn on the snout, two long eyebrow horns, and a toothless beak.

  • The individuals referred to Torosaurus are all large, comparable to the largest Triceratops specimens.

  • The name Torosaurus is an allusion is to the fenestrae or ("window-like") holes in the elongated frill, which have traditionally served to distinguish it from the solid frill of Trioceratops.
