Aberdeen’s £22 million Third Don Crossing was officially opened to the public on 09/06/16 by City council leader Jenny Laing who was joined by hundreds of children from Riverbank and Danestone primary schools as she cut the ribbon to the long-awaited crossing.
Pupils from Riverbank and Danestone primary schools voted to name the crossing Diamond Bridge. The name is based on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Aberdeen’s historic ties with HMS Diamond.
Diamond Bridge is Aberdeen's biggest major new bridge since the construction of the Queen Elizabeth bridge 30 years ago. The key stats of the project are listed as:
90 metres - Total span over the River Don
26 metres - The span of the smaller bridge over the Mill Lade
30,000 m² - The amount of road surface
14,000 m² - Amount of footpaths and cycle ways
6.5 km - The amount of drainage installed
14,000 - Trees and bushes planted
80,000 m3 - Earth works
210,000 - Man hours expended by Balfour Beatty and the supply chain
