Kanizsa egykori várának emléket állító alkotás a Vár úton áll. Az európai jelentőségű kanizsai várat osztrák utasításra lebontották, az anyagát széthordták, később a helyét is beépítették. Így nem maradt egyetlen bemutatható pont sem ebből a történelmi emlékből.
Ezért tervezett Kanizsa vára török uralom aluli felszabadulásának 300. évfordulója megünneplésére 1988-ban emlékeztetőt a hajdani vár közelében a Nagykanizsai Történelmi Emlékbizottság. Az elgondolást végül is városi összefogással a Nagykanizsai Városvédő Egyesület valósította meg 1996-ban.
A Várkapu emlékmű monumentalitásával méltó emléket állít ennek a történelmi korszaknak. A kapu előtt látható mellszobor a vár leghíresebb kapitányát, Thúry Györgyöt ábrázolja. A mű Vörös János szobrászművész alkotása.

Nagykanizsa - Nagykanizsa Castle Gate Memorial
This monument - creating a memorial to Kanizsa's former fortress – can be found on Castle Road. The castle of Kanizsa, which had formerly been of European significance, was demolished by Austrians, dismantled by locals and subsequently the area was used to give place to new buildings. Therefore there isn’t a single thing to show of the actual historical memory.
That is why the Historical Memorial Committee of Nagykanizsa prepared plans for a memorial place near the site of the original castle in 1988, to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the liberation from under the Turkish rule. Finally, the plans got implemented by Nagykanizsa City Protection Association in 1996, in collaboration with the inhabitants of the city.
With its great measures the monument of the Castle Gate provides worthy memory of a historical era. In front of the gate you can see the statue of the most famous captain of the castle, György Thúry by sculptor János Vörös.
