Local Lore from BOTH SIDES of THE SWAMP: "This little town was estabilished in 1890 and was named by C. R. Fitt, a Confederate soldier who found himself at the cose of the war in the beautiful town of Luray, Virginia. Records show that Luray was charted by General Assembly in 1891 and recharted in 1904." ....."The true legend of Luray would never truly be told without mentioning the fact that shortly after the ratification of the 18th amendment around 1920, she was well known throughout the eastern United States for the making of "spirits". Hard times were here and Black Creddk with its easily obtainable, good water was the perfect spot for this new and thriving industry--Bootlegging. As an aftermath of this, Luray became known as "Little Chicago" due to the outlawfulness here at this time.
