Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the listed coordinates!

The Space Shuttle was a partially reusable spacecraft designed to carry up to seven astronauts and up to 22,700kg of payload into low earth orbit. The system is officially dubbed the Space Transportation System (STS). The shuttle orbiter was launched vertically using traditional liquid and solid fuelled boosters to achieve orbit. When the mission is complete, the orbiter returns to earth as a glider and lands as a conventional, albeit unpowered, aircraft.

The Space Shuttle crew can perform a variety of tasks including scientific experimentation and servicing satellites. The orbiter, in addition to carrying satellites to orbit, was able to retrieve them and bring them back to earth for maintenance and repair.

There were five orbiters built: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour. Each orbiter was built for a projected life of 100 flights. Tragically, Challenger was lost during launch in 1986 and Columbia was lost during re-entry in 2003. They are retired in now and will be replaced with a new system dubbed Orion.
