Father's day is tomorrow, and I was driving around today thinking about my dad, as well as the backpacking trek my 13 year old son and I are leaving for tomorrow with our wonderful Trail Life USA Troop 98. My dad is currently 92 years old and in pretty good health. We've been on alot of adventures together - mostly family vacations and the sort, and I'm blessed to get to take my son on some even greater adventures in the amazing outdoors.
A few years ago, I read a book titled "America's Greatest Generation" by Tom Brokaw. It's a book that described my dad perfectly and an excellent read composed of stories from the people in this generation. He dropped out of school to join the Navy - stationed on the USS Salt Lake City (CA-25). He was originally placed on another vessel, but it was overcrowded - so they moved him to the "Swayback Maru" (as it was nicknamed). The first ship sunk, and my grandmother received a letter stating my dad had been lost at sea. Can you imagine? All the while, he was safe on his Heavy Cruiser. He was soon thrust into World War II, arriving at Pearl Harbor in time to help clean up after the tragic bombing, and later his ship was an escort for Doolittle's Raid.
About three years ago, one Veteran's Day, I called him to thank him for his time in the service. "Well, son - I'd do it all again. It was fun!"
While I was out driving, I thought I should place a cache for Father's Day, honoring my heroic dad. I looked up and saw a business with the word "Navy" in the title, and knew exactly where I would place this one.
Cache is located at the back of this business. I did see a surveillance camera out there, but really doubt anyone's watching it 24/7. Just employ some stealth, and have fun.
