Originally built as the Elizabethtown, Lexington, and Big Sandy Railroad in 1881, this line was purchased by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in 1892. Morehead was a busy place in the early years as it was the interchange point with the Morehead and North Fork Railroad, headquartered in nearby Clearfield. After the timber played out and coal mining became less important, the line between Ashland and Lexington served very few customers and in 1985, CSX abandoned the line. The right-of-way was purchased around Morehead to make a smoother route for US60 through town.
The depot here is a standard C&O design and depots in Olive Hill and Mt. Sterling are similar. Morehead has done a nice job of preservation and the freight depot houses a museum of local history, which we didn't get to see because it's only open on Fridays and Saturdays.
