The Black Swamp is an area of water (when it rains) it is covered in reeds and rushes, which gives the impression, that the water has a dark colour.
The swamp is also a Wildlife Refuge and is just a couple of kilometres north of Balmoral. The town now known as Balmoral was originally called Black Swamp. Just when the name was changed is unknown, but a group of early settlers many who came from Scotland gave Balmoral it's name after the Estate purchased in Scotland by Queen Victoria.
