C = a traveller born in 1712, thought to be the first man in the UK to use a particular type of wet-weather apparatus
D = a politician born in 1821 who gave his name to a big lump of sacred sandstone
E = an engineer and politician born in 1872 who gave his name to his building company, which became one of the country's largest and was sold for £1.24bn in 2014
And finally:
F = a writer who wasn't born in Portsmouth, but who described his time living in the city as "the most unhappy, hopeless period of my life"
