Römische Ziegelei

Augusta Raurica, ist eine Siedlung aus römischer Zeit am Südufer des Rheins einige Kilometer östlich von Basel. An dieser Stelle liegen heute die Gemeinden Augst, und Kaiseraugst. Der grösste Teil der erhaltenen Anlagen steht in Augst. Die Ausgrabungen und Rekonstruktionen alter Gebäude sind noch in vollem Gange.

Im Gebiet des heutigen Liebrüti-Quartiers in Kaiseraugst stehen zwei von mehreren Ziegelbrennöfen. 
Im 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. wurde hier im grossen Stil Baukeramik für die ganze Stadt produziert.
Die Ziegel und Platten wurden zunächst aus Lehm geformt und an der Luft getrocknet. Danach wurden sie in der Brennkammer gebrannt. Noch heute kann man in einer Brennkammer einen Restposten des letzten Brandes von sogenannten Deckziegeln sehen. Die hier produzierten Ziegel wurden rheinabwärts bis Strassburg in Frankreich und Aareaufwärts bis Biel im Kanton Bern verschifft.

Roman brick kiln

Augusta Raurica is a Roman archaeological site and an open-air museum in Switzerland, located on the south bank of the Rhine river about 20 km east of Basel near the villages of Augst and Kaiseraugst. 
It is the site of the oldest known Roman colony on the Rhine. 
Excavations and reconstructions of old buildings are still in full swing. 

In the area which is now known as the Liebrueti-quarter in Kaiseraugst are two of several brick kilns.
In the 4th century AD ceramics were produced here for the whole city. The brick and tile were first formed of clay and dried in the air. Thereafter, they were fired in the combustion chamber. Today you can still see a residual item of the last fire of so-called covering tiles in a combustion chamber. The bricks produced here were shipped down the river Rhine to Strasbourg in France and shipped up the river Aare to Biel in canton Bern.
