Geocache Description:

Glofa'r Navigation / Navigation Colliery

Crumlin Navigation Colliery was built in 1907-1911 at a time when South Wales was the world's largest coal exporter. In 1935 it employed 86 men on the surface and 358 men underground. Two years later they hit an underground lake and the water eventually made its way half way up the shafts. Following emergency pumping operations the pit bottom was permanently raised by 39 metres.

Following Nationalisation in 1947 Crumlin Navigation employed 79 men on the surface and 336 underground. It closed in September 1967. The colliery's buildings are protected as listed buildings. Maximum output at Crumlin occurred in 1954 with 145,129 tons of coal produced.

Access to the colliery site itself is restricted, but the cache is outside the grounds. You are looking for a small black Buffalo-type container (a replacement container, since the original one went missing).
