You will be coming to the scenic and expansive Steep Rock Preserve in Washington, CT. The park is home to an abundance of nature's great gifts; amazing views, a winding river, a bounty of wildlife to observe, man made wood bridges, and a century old railroad tunnel that burrows through a small hill. You can park in various places throughout the area, either at the main parking lot off of River Road, or further down on the yellow trail near the tunnel and bridge. The cache is nestled somewhere beyond the tunnel, so you'll be required to pass through in order to find it (don't worry, it isn't THAT scary).
---
"The railroad tunnel was constructed from 1871 to 1872 as part of the Shepaug Valley Railroad. A crew of coal miners from Pennsylvania built the 235-foot curved tunnel by hand using picks, dynamite and nitroglycerin to blast through Steep Rock Ridge. It took them only nine months to complete, a remarkably quick project in those days. The railroad ceased operation in 1948. Today, hikers enjoy the cool, damp air within the darkness of these chiseled bedrock walls as a refreshing respite on a warm summer day."

Directions: From the main parking lot (next to the horse riding ring), take the yellow circle trail along Tunnel Road to the blue square trail to the Railroad Tunnel. The yellow circle trail is large enough to allow for vehicle access, so do not be afraid to take your car all the way down to the end to park. A trail map can be found at the beginning of the green circle trail near the main parking lot off of River Road. Two parking waypoints have been included for your use.
