Remote location near to the disused old port railway in the Galloway hills. It marks the location where a WW2 Typoon fighter crashed on route to the south coast. The pilot did not survive and was buried in Ayr cemetery . A small monument marks the site where. P/O Kenneth Mitchell of the Royal Canadian Air Force crashed. I ask that anyone who venture into this place spends a couple of minutes clearing the undergrowth from the monument.
after parking at the visitor centre at Big Water ofFleet viaduct at Gatehouse of Fleet station, a three mile track along the disused railway towards mossdale brings you to a point where the track bears left . Two hundred yards before this bend leave the path ( just past a big rock formation ) to the left. Pass a derelict building on left side and go over the gap in the wall. Turn right and follow the wall for approx 50 feet to the top of a small rise then walk 45 degrees left uphill until it flattens out. The monument is on the left some 40 ft away but may be overgrown again. Small tradition cache placed respectfully beside monument.
