Geocache Description:

A Kayak Cache in Stafford County!

Lake Mooney is a reservoir in southern Stafford County Virginia located at 495 Greenbank Road, Stafford VA 22406. The reservoir covers 520 acres and holds 5.5 billion gallons of water. The distance from the dam to the opposite side of the reservoir, the longest finger, is two miles.

Formerly known as the Rocky Pen Run Reservoir, it was renamed to Lake Mooney, and dedicated in honor of Stafford County Deputy Sheriff Jason Edward Mooney. Deputy Mooney died October 19, 2007, in an automobile accident on I-95, while responding to an Emergency Call. Deputy Mooney was a 2002 graduate of Colonial Forge High School. He worked as a Deputy for the Stafford County Sheriff's Office, and was an active member of the Stafford County Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a Marine Corps Reservist who served one tour of duty in Iraq. The reservoir was named after Deputy Mooney to honor his service to the Citizens of Stafford County and his service to the United States of America.

The public boat launch officially opened at 0800 28 May 2016. As a water source reservoir, no gas motors or swimming are permitted anywhere in the lake. Currently, only kayaks and canoes are permitted. Until the fish population is confirmed as stable, no fishing is permitted.

Lake Mooney is open 12 months of the year, weather permitting.

The park is open during the following times:
Mid-March through 31 Oct: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Daily
01 Nov through Mid-March: 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM Daily

This geocache has been placed in the Lake Mooney reservoir. It is only accessible via kayak or canoe. It is a camo-painted TeamSlug "special" container that can be reached while sitting in a kayak. If one attempts to reach this geocache via land, you will get wet. Some Maps have not been updated since the reservoir completed filling, so it may look reachable via land, but it isn't. No pen, so please bring your own. Please replace as found so others can enjoy into the future.
