[ITA] LA STORIA DEL BORGO DI MERGOZZO
Il nome Mergozzo pare derivi dall’antica voce celtica ‘Muregocium’, che sembra significhi palude o acqua nera per il riflesso cupo che il Monte Orfano getta sul lago. I celti, in effetti, abitarono queste zone, come il ritrovamento di necropoli e travi probabilmente elementi di palafitte ne sono testimonianza.
Al declinare della civiltà celtica subentrarono sul territorio i conquistatori romani. Del periodo romano rimangono interessanti ritrovamenti archeologici, soprattutto sepolcreti. Con la caduta dell’Impero ebbero inizio le invasioni barbariche di Longobardi e Franchi e Mergozzo divenne prima Ducato e poi Contado.
Intorno all’anno 1250 il villaggio di Mergozzo fu elevato alla dignità di borgo in quanto posto in posizione strategica all’incrocio di importanti strade e vennero costruiti il tradizionale castello e le mura di cinta. Sotto il dominio dei Visconti protagonisti di un periodo difficile, il marmo rosa di Candoglia venne tuttavia scelto per la costruzione del Duomo di Milano. Verso la metà del XV secolo Mergozzo con le sue terre passò in feudo alla nobile casa dei Borromeo i quali sfruttarono razionalmente le sue ricche cave di granito.
Negli anni che seguirono si succedettero nella zona varie dominazioni, francese, svizzera e spagnola, e con l’esplodere della terribile epidemia di peste ebbe inizio un periodo di desolazione e ristrettezze. Nel 1700 l’Ossola fu distaccata dall’ex ducato di Milano ed annessa agli stati del re di Sardegna ed esultò alla proclamazione del nuovo Regno d’ Italia nel 1861. Da allora Mergozzo ha così condiviso nel bene e nel male le sorti prima della monarchia e poi della repubblica italiana.

[ENG] HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF MERGOZZO
The name Mergozzo seems to derive from the ancient Celtic term ‘Muregocium’, which is believed to mean swamp or black water due to the dark reflection that the Monte Orfano casts on the lake. As a matter of fact, the Celts inhabited these areas, as evidenced by the discovery of necropolises and piles likely to be elements of stilt houses.
With the downfall of the Celtic civilization, this was replaced by Roman conquerors. From the Roman period, interesting archaeological finds remain, mainly burial grounds. With the fall of the Empire, the barbarian invasions of Lombards and Franks began and Mergozzo became first a Duchy and then an Earldom.
Around the year 1250, Mergozzo was elevated to the rank of borgo due to its strategic position at the crossroad of important routes and the traditional castle and city walls were built. Under the rule of the Visconti family, who was the protagonist in difficult times, the pink marble of Candoglia was nonetheless chosen for the construction of the Duomo in Milan. In mid-15th century, Mergozzo and its territories were left as a fief to the noble house of Borromeo, who took sensible advantage of the rich granite quarries.
In the years that followed, the area fell under several dominations (French, Swiss and Spanish) and with the outbreak of the terrible plague epidemic, a period of desolation and straitened circumstances began. In the 1700s, Ossola was detached from the former Duchy of Milan and it was annexed to the states of the King of Sardinia. In 1861, it rejoiced at the proclamation of the new Kingdom of Italy and since then, Mergozzo has thus shared, for better or for worse, the fate first of the monarchy and then of the Italian Republic.
