Geocache Description:

This Cache is the 2nd of 7 and can be combined with the caches below to make a circular route around Fontmell Down. See: Fontmell Down - 1 (GC6MKKR) for full details about parking and the route.

Your route out from the car park has probably taken you across “Clubmens’ Down”. The Clubmen came in to existence during the English Civil War (1642-51). Although lasting 9 years, there was only a relatively small number of battles fought. However, throughout this period, large armies of often rather undisciplined soldiers travelled/rampaged to a fro across the country requisitioning food, animals and imposing themselves in other less pleasant ways upon the local population. This caused much ill feeling and outrage leading to initially spontaneous and then organised uprisings by the local population. The ringleaders of these groups, which became known as the Clubmen were often the local clergy or minor gentry. Clubmens’ Down is thought to be the location of a meeting of some 3000 Clubmen in May 1645. Although there is some doubt as to how reliable this is as the name “Clubmens’ Down” doesn’t appear on OS maps prior to the 1960s. The Clubmen were certainly active in the area in 1645. In August Oliver Cromwell succeeded in getting a large gathering on nearby Duncliffe Hill to disperse peacefully and soon after he forcibly dealt with a gathering of some 2000 in the Iron Age Hill Fort on nearby Hambledon Hill.

Note: The difficulty for each of the caches is on an individual basis. The Terrain takes into account the whole route and all caches involved. In winter sections of the route can be muddy, especially in gateways. You will need a pen for the micro-caches.

This cache combines with the caches below to make a circular route around the Down. The complete route is a gently undulating walk of just under 2 miles (3.5km) around the top of the down. Geodogs are welcome but please keep them under close control as the Down is grazed by animals.

You are looking for a tethered Bison style micro cache which contains only the log book, please bring a pen and do not overtighten container top, it destroys the seal and the log gets wet. Expect nettles during the Summer!

The other caches in this series are:

Enjoy walking on Fontmell Down and Happy Caching.
