This Cache is the 5th of 7 and can be combined with the caches below to make a circular route around Fontmell Down. See: Fontmell Down - 1 (GC6MKKR) for full details about parking and the route.
Crazy as it might seem today the top of Fontmell Down was once a golf course! This was originally laid out in the 1920s by Rolf Gardiner. If you look carefully as you walk around the Down you can still see some of the greens, you have walked past 3 of them to reach here from Fontmell Down – 4. The club house (19th hole) was in Gore Clump, the little triangle of land by the turning for Compton Abbas airfield. During WW2 it was used by the local Home Guard as their headquarters and drill hall.
Note: The difficulty for each of the caches is on an individual basis. The Terrain takes into account the whole route and all caches involved. In winter sections of the route can be muddy, especially in gateways. You will need a pen for the micro-caches.
This cache combines with the caches below to make a circular route around the Down. The complete route is a gently undulating walk of just under 2 miles (3.5km) around the top of the down. Geodogs are welcome but please keep them under close control as the Down is grazed by animals.
If you doing this circuit in cache order, for No.5, follow round the fenceline (south westerly direction) to reach a bridle gate then left through it, eastwards.
You are looking for a Bison style micro cache which contains only the log book, please bring a pen.
