A commerative plaque honoring Harry Houdini, born as Ehrich Weisz has been erected near the Pine Street Methodist Church on July 1st, 2016 as part of Williamsport's 150th birthday bash. Houdini first performed in Williamsport in 1895 as part of the Welsh Brothers' ten cent circus, four years before he became famous. He returned to Williamsport is 1924 and performed at the Pine Street Methodist Church in order to debunk mediums of his day. Houdini started out with card tricks calling himself the "King of Cards" before moving on to escape acts. He then soon started performing in the top vaudeville shows in the county. He was also well known for asking police to shackle and lock him in their jail cells which he would escape. As impersonaters popped up, he allowed audience members to challenge him to escape contraptions of their making. His most famous stunts were the chinese water torture cell, the milkcan escape and the suspended straight jacket escape.
