The recent K.E.T. wildflower caches are reminding me that I'm not very good at identifying trees. Back home in Kansas I could only recognize our state tree, the cottonwood. I'm actually great at identifying South African trees thanks to summers conducing surveys on the damage caused by African elephants to their habitat. I can spot an Acacia nigrescens (knobthorn) or a Sclerocarya birrea (marula tree) from a mile away and I know not to mess with Ziziphus mucronata (buffalo thorn) unless I want to get hooked in by fishook thorns and then stabbed with inch long needles. While that knowledge doesn't exactly help me here in New York, luckily I don't have to worry about trees with multi-inch long spikes. However, I'm not recognizing many of the trees around Tompkins County yet. I've developed a little quiz that is helping me to learn more about some of the trees in the area.
