A quick grab along a river road outside of Saltsburg. From Saltsburg south, the West Penn Trail takes over as the premium caching trail along the Conemaugh River. This is the last nice view on this road before the knotweed takes over. Kayakers and fishermen congregate around the bridge abutments here. Cache is located at the entrance to the river road access.
One of a series of caches placed at points along the Kiskiminetas river. More will be added as I find the time. This series is modeled after a local favorite of mine, the Tea Top Run series. Containers are all homemade using the tops of tea bottles. They tend to be waterproof and long lasting. There's room for small swag. Once you've found one, you'll know what you're looking for. The Kiskiminetas river is a beautiful, underrated resource. There are tons of opportunities for recreation along its 27 mile length, from the Conemaugh/Loyalhanna confluence in Saltsburg to Schenley, where it joins the Allegheny River. The water quality, degraded for years by the runoff from numerous mines along its length, has improved significantly in recent years to the point where fish can once again be eaten. The trails that run beside it offer many additional caching opportunities. Enjoy!
