Geocache Description:

This cache is placed as a navigation marker to highlight the bypass on the track to Waitewaewae Hut. Another cache marks the end of the bypass.

The original track now has a slip which you may choose is passable. If you wish to avoid the slip then a bypass track has been developed - this cache is a few meters past the start of this bypass track. If you are coming from Otaki then it is on your right, behind the white tree under some rocks. You will need your own pen.

The slip I am talking about is marked on the map with this cache.

Two options exist to get to Waitewaewae hut from here.

You may chose not to take the bypass and head over the slip - a 'mini bypass' has been created for this purpose HOWEVER the slip has grown and part of this mini bypass has slipped away. This is an ACTIVE SLIP, so be aware. I took this route on my way to Waitewaewae Hut. Once above the slip I then had to climb even higher and further around - on my search back to the main track I spent over half an hour untangling myself from the vibrant supple jack, wishing I had brought some secateurs with me. Once back on the main track you then have the opportunity to find Snoozing Rust and then heading up Saddle Creek with its many crossings until you hit the plateau and the junction marking the end of the bypass.

The second option is to take the gnarly uphill bypass which was placed by DOC so you may avoid the slip.

The choice is yours. Note that whichever option you choose after this junction, the terrain rating goes up by a full point very soon after the junction.

If you are a city slicker on a simple day walk, now is the time to TURN BACK!!! Please dont put yourself in danger.
