Geocache Description:

This cache uses a very simple Wherigo cartridge to guide you from the starting point to a place where you can learn about a romantic part of Burwell's history which dates back nearly 200 years! So who was Edward and who was his Jane?

What is Wherigo?

Wherigo cartridges can be downloaded and run on many GPS handsets or on mobile phones or tablet/'pad' computers if you also download a suitable app. A wherigo cartridge uses its ability to know where you are to act as a ‘guide’ (e.g. on a tour round interesting sites or on an imaginary adventure set in the 'real' world). The Wherigo.com website is the prime source of information about how to use Wherigo cartridges, but we're happy to give some basic hints if you contact us through Geocaching messaging/email.

Which Wherigo cartridge do I download?

You will need 'The Reverse Geocache - Beta' cartridge. Download it from here This is a very clever 'general-purpose' cartridge written by -Waldmeister- to whom many thanks.

How does it work?

1. Go to the start co-ordinates above (Burwell War memorial) and count how many men named BRIDGEMAN are listed there as having died in WW1. This number is A.

2. Use number A to complete this set of three 6-digit numbers:
8051A1
2A3328
038750

3. These 6-digit numbers are an encrypted version of the co-ordinates of the place where you can learn more about Edward and Jane ('information point'). This isn't where the cache is, but the two are close to each other. You enter the numbers into the cartridge when it asks for them. Then, every time you ask it, the cartridge tells you how FAR AWAY the information point is but NOT the direction. If you move and ask again the distance will have changed and so by trial-and-error, cunning calculation or just plain luck you can zero-in on your goal.

4. If you get to within 25 metres the cartridge will give you the information point's exact GPS co-ordinates.

5. Once you are at the information point the romantic secret of Edward and Jane and the significance of this place will be revealed on the wall - there's even more to learn if you do an internet search using the new information you have!

6. When you are standing at the information point, the physical cache and log can be found behind the first tall metal thing to your left.

Extras

Both Edward and Jane were real people although in the best traditions of stories her real name was Mary S******. She is buried in Burwell (Waypoint GRAVE1). Her gravestone has an enigmatic inscription and is worth a visit. Nearby is the 'Flaming Heart' gravestone (Waypoint GRAVE2) which commemorates the victims of the 'Great Fire of Burwell' (see also cache 'History of Burwell - 1727 Fire & Pound Hill' - GC5NCNJ).

When you reach the final, you will be given some statistics and you will get a personal password which you can enter into the Code Generator if you select "create" instead of "play" at the start of the cartridge. Save this; then if you want to, you can build your own reverse cache where ever you want in the world - just tell -Waldmeister- about your plans!
