Збігається із частиною Європейського автомобільного маршруту E40 (Кале — Брюссель — Краків — Київ — Волгоград — Ташкент — Алмати — Ріддер); на території Львівської і Закарпатської областей — E50 (Брест (Франція) — Париж — Прага — Ужгород — Донецьк — Ростов-на-Дону — Махачкала); на території Закарпатської області — E573(Пюшпекладань — Дебрецен — Ньїредьхаза — Чоп — Ужгород). Частина європейських транспортних коридорів № 3 та № 5.
Починається в Києві, проходить через Коростишів, Житомир, Новоград-Волинський, Корець, Рівне, Броди, Львів, Стрий, Сколе, Сваляву, Мукачеве, Ужгород та закінчується на пропускному пунктіЧоп. На теріторії Угорщини продовжується як автошлях 4.

History
The route from Lemberg via Stryj to the then Austro-Hungarian border belonged until 1918 to the Austrian crown land of Galicia and was called the Stryjer Reichsstraße.[3]

From Kiev to Rivne, the road features 2 lanes in both directions with physical separation, with the exception of Zhytomyr bypass. From Rivne on, the road is mostly a single carriageway, though some dual carriageway sections exist.

The route starts at the intersection of the Kiev's beltway and Victory Parkway (Prospekt Peremohy), for which it serves as an extension. It uysed to be known as Brest-Litovsk Highway (Brest-Lytovske Shose).
