Geocache Description:

Ntlonyana has had 3 significant shark attacks on surfers. The Geocache is in memorial of these surfers.

The plaque is in memorial of Alex Macun who was a 27 year old PE technicon surfer who was attacked killed by shark/s on 1982.06.29.

As you face the ocean the attack took place in the far side of the bay on your right. The initial attack was estimated to be a White Shark of 2.4 metres. His body was never recovered.

Other shark attacks at this point were Simon Hammerton (1981.05.05) and Mark Penches (1997.07.21). Both these attacks took place in the waves to your left as you face the ocean.

Simon Hammerton was attacked by a tiger shark estimated at 2.07 metres. His left calf muscle was substantially damaged and he eventually had his leg amputated below the knee. He resides on the Durban North Coast to this day.

Mark Penches, an Australian surfer, was aggressively attacked and killed by a White Shark estimated greater than 4.5 metres in size. During the attack his right leg was completely severed.

The surf boards of both Mark Penches and Alex Macun remain on display at the Natal Sharks Board in Umhlanga.
