Geocache Description:

McMill Building - United States Post Office and Courthouse

After Congress allocated $100,000 for the construction of the building, James Knox Taylor designed the Second Renaissance Revival style building which was started in 1903 and completed in 1904. There was a seamless addition to the north side of the building in 1930. In addition to the Federal Post Office and Federal Court House, it also served as the Federal Jail and Marshal’s quarters. By 1974, the building was vacated and is now privately owned and gets its name the “McMill Building” from the Roman numerals “MCMIII” above the west entrance. MCMIII is the date of construction in Roman Numerals.

The posted coordinates will bring you to the northwest corner of the McMill Building.  There you will see a date in Roman Numerals at the bottom of the west wall.  Convert this date into a standard 4-digit year.  Now do the same to the date above the door on the west entrance.  Add these two years together.  Treat your result as ABCD.  Now count the number of CEMENT eagles above the door on the west entrance.  This number is E.  Finally, count the number of CEMENT eagles above the door on the south side of the building.  This number is F.  Solve below to find the final location of this cache.

2016 marks the 150th Anniversary of Norfolk's founding.  The celebration continues though the end of the year!  16 geocaches have been placed at historic locations around Norfolk.  You are invited to "Uncover Norfolk's Past . . . One Cache At A Time".  Each cache contains a punch specific to that location (DO NOT REMOVE PUNCH FROM CACHE).  Sign the cache log and then use the punch to mark your game card for that location.  Game cards are available at the Norfolk Visitor's Bureau (609 W Norfolk Ave) and at the Dover office (1000 W Norfolk Ave).  When you have completed the trail and filled your card, you can turn it in for a commemorative Norfolk 150 Geocoin (while supplies last)!

If you complete the trail and turn in your game card prior to September 23rd, 2016, you will also be entered into a drawing for a brand new 50" flatscreen TV to be given away at Norfolk's Oktoberfest celebration on September 24th!! You need not be present to win the TV and no purchase is necessary.  The Norfolk 150 Trail will be open through DECEMBER 31st, 2016!
