Geocache Description:

Welcome to John Bryan State Park. In may 1925, this area became one of the first forest parks.
John Bryan State Park and the adjoining Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve has been designated as a
National Natural Landmark by he U.S. Department of the Interior. Please be respectful and follow
all rules of the park.

Edward Francis Baxter Orton, Sr. (March 9, 1829 – October 16, 1899), a Harvard educated geologist, did important studies in economic geology and was one of the first to warn of the probable exhaustion of oil and gas reserves if waste continued. He was born in Deposit, New York, and graduated from Hamilton College in 1848. Although an ordained minister, Orton taught science most of his life. After teaching at a normal school and being principal of an academy, he became professor of natural history at Antioch College in 1865. He became president of Antioch in 1872 but left the following year to become president of Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College (which in 1878 became Ohio State University).

Edward Orton was the first President of The Ohio State University and served as President from 1873-1881. Orton was a Professor of Geology from 1873–1899 and Ohio's State Geologist from 1882 until his death in 1899. Orton Sr. suffered a partially paralyzing stroke in 1891, but continued to work. Orton was an influential geologist with important publications on the petroleum geology of Ohio, stratigraphy, and paleontology.

OSU constructed a geology building in 1893, and named it Orton Hall, in tribute to Orton's seminal contributions. In 1920, his son Edward J. Orton, Jr., the first Chairman of Ceramic Engineering at The Ohio State University, honored his father with the Orton Memorial Library of Geology, inside Orton Hall, for perusing the theories and records of earthly change.

The area near this caches used to be the location of the Orton pool. The pool including a bath house was constructed September of 1944. The pool was enjoyed by many park visitors and was open to the public. As development entered the area the pool usage began to dwindle. The pool later was filled-in and the bath house structure was removed on November 22 of 1997. The top rim of the pool can still be found by walking in the field near the Orton picnic area.

As for the cache, it is located very near where the pool used to exist. You will be looking for a larger plastic peanut butter jar covered with camo tape. The park closes at dark, so night caching allowed. Enjoy your visit to one of the state's most scenic parks!
