Geocache Description:

Welcome to John Bryan State Park. In may 1925, this area became one of the first forest parks. John Bryan State Park and the adjoining Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve has been designated as a National Natural Landmark by he U.S. Department of the Interior. Please be respectful and follow all rules of the park

John Bryan had a great respect for the natural world. In 1918, he bequeathed Riverside Farm to the state of Ohio, "...to be cultivated by the state as a forestry, botanic and wildlife reserve park and experiment station," which would bear his name. It was stipulated that “no religious services be held on the property and that no well-behaved person be excluded because of race or color.” Remarkably, Ohio Governors James M. Cox, Harry L. Davis, and Alvin Victor Donahey refused the gift under these conditions. In 1923, the legislature intervened, enacting a bill accepting the property.

Two years later, John Bryan became Ohio’s first state forest park. In 1949, John Bryan State Park was transferred to the newly created ODNR Division of Parks and Recreation Additional land was later donated in memory of Edward Orton, former president of nearby Antioch College and first president of The Ohio State University. In 1972, the Clifton Gorge National Natural Landmark Area was established along the river on land adjacent to the park.

With establishment of the Emergency Conservation Work (ECW) program in 1933, better known as the Civilian Conservation Corp. (CCC) resources became available to develop facilities for the park. Civilian Conservation Corp. Co. 553 SP-16 arrived at John Bryan in June 1935 to begin six years of work. The men laid out roads and blazed miles of trails (including the Pittsburgh–Cincinnati Stagecoach Trail preserving portions of a 19th century wagon-road). Also, enrollees built two foot-bridges across the Little Miami River. One bridge featured a dam that, when closed, created a “swimming hole.” The workers also erected the park office, two picnic shelters, and a log and stone “Day Lodge” with two fireplaces, kitchen, and dining area.

Near the cache site stands the remains of one of the CCC projects from the 1930's. Please be respectful of the area. The cache is near but not on or around any of the remains. The cache is a small plastic container. As always, be respectful of the area and follow parks rules.
