Geocache Description:

Welcome to Exner Marsh

This site offers 1.5 miles of hiking and cross country skiing trail.  Along these trails, there is a scenic view of the 116 acres of Illinois State Nature Preserve.

SITE ADVISORY If you park at the Miller Road lot. Take the paved bike path north (to the right) until it hooks up with the mowed grass trail. Wetlands are currently reclaiming part of the site (which is awesome) so we are re-routing the trail.

The 2016 Cache Your Way program is over but the cache remains for the fun of it!

About the Site

Exner Marsh lies in a shallow glacial lake bed now entirely underlain by organic deposits and bordered by uplands consisting of both glacial till and outwash deposits. It is representative of the Morainal Section of the Northeastern Morainal Division. Emergent shallow water marsh is the dominant community punctuated throughout by shallow ponds.  Calcareous floating mat community occupies a core of suspended peat and small scattered peat mats.

This community is related to the early stages of bog development. Wire sedge, blue joint, and marsh shield fern are the common plants.

Cache Your Way Question

What solitary species of bat is more likely to be found alone under segments of exfoliated bark on trees on District sites than found using a bat box or hanging out with other bats in old buildings?

Additional Info About the Bat

This bat primarily consumes soft-bodies insects but will also eat spiders and harvestmen.  They are slow but maneuverable flyers that can detect prey a short distance away.

The most common cause of death for this bat is wind energy facilities.
