What made Leonardo da Vinci such a great artist was also what made him such a great inventor: his fascination with the world around him. This was the case with water. In his lifetime, da Vinci designed many inventions dealing with water – perhaps, most notably, scuba gear.
While working in Venice, the "water city", in 1500, da Vinci designed his scuba gear for sneak attacks on enemy ships from underwater. The leather diving suit was equipped with a bag-like mask that went over the diver’s head. Attached to the mask around the nose area were two cane tubes that led up to a cork diving bell floating on the surface.
Air was provided from the opening of the tubes to the diver below. The mask also was equipped with a valve-operated balloon that could be inflated or deflated, so the diver could more easily surface or sink. Additionally, Leonardo da Vinci’s scuba gear invention incorporated a pouch for the diver to urinate in.
Da Vinci’s idea for Scuba gear (like many of his invention ideas) didn’t actually become well-known until his famous Codex Atlanticus, a twelve-volume set of his drawings and notes, was published after his death.

Ce qui a rendu Leonardo Da Vinci un tel grand artiste était aussi ce qui fait de lui un grand inventeur: sa fascination pour le monde autour de lui. Ce fut le cas avec l'eau. Dans sa vie, Da Vinci a conçu de nombreuses inventions portant sur l'eau. Peut-être, plus particulièrement, l'équipement de plongée.
Tout en travaillant à Venise, la «ville d'eau», en 1500, Da Vinci a conçu son équipement de plongée pour les attaques sournoises sur les sous-marins ennemis. Le costume en cuir de plongée était équipé d'un masque en forme de sac qui allait sur la tête du plongeur. Attaché au masque autour de la zone du nez, deux tubes de canne étaient rattachés à une cloche de plongée en liège flottant à la surface.
L'air était fourni par l'ouverture des tubes au plongeur. Le masque a également été équipé d'un ballon à soupape à commande qui peut être gonflé ou dégonflé, de sorte que le plongeur puisse plus facilement plonger ou faire surface. De plus, l'équipement de plongée de Leonardo Da Vinci était munis d'une poche pour uriner.
L'idée de Da Vinci pour l'équipement de plongée (comme beaucoup de ses idées d'invention) n'est pas réellement devenu bien connu jusqu'à ce que son fameux "Codex Atlanticus", un ensemble de ses dessins et notes de douze volumes, soit publié après sa mort.
