La Serra (il cui nome completo è Serra Morenica di Ivrea) è un rilievo morenico di origine glaciale generato dalle nove grandi glaciazioni susseguitesi negli ultimi 900.000 anni. Appartiene al vasto complesso dell'Anfiteatro Morenico di Ivrea, del quale rappresenta la morena laterale sinistra, ossia il complesso collinare che segna la massima espansione del ghiacciaio proveniente dalla Val d'Aosta che sfociava nella Pianura Padana prodottosi nel corso varie glaciazioni. Si calcola che il ghiacciaio nel corso delle varie glaciazioni abbia raggiunto una lungezza di oltre 100 km e un'altezza di circa 800 metri. Per le dimensioni del ghiacciaio che l'ha generato,l'Anfiteatro Morenico di Ivrea è la più grande formazione del genere esistente in Europa e probabilmente del mondo.
La Serra si estende dal territorio di Andrate (in provincia di Torino) fino alle porte di Cavaglià (in provincia di Biella). Geograficamente ha origine dalle pendici meridionali del Mombarone (2.371 m s.l.m.) e si dirige con percorso quasi rettilineo verso sud-est per circa 20 km fino a sfrangiarsi nelle colline che circondano il Lago di Viverone. E' costituita da una serie di creste parallele ben evidenti prodotte dalle varie pulsazioni glaciali.
La cresta più alta della Serra raggiunge un dislivello massimo di 600 metri rispetto alla pianura interna all'anfiteatro morenico nella zona di Andrate. Questo dislivello si riduce gradualmente verso est fino a toccare i 250 metri circa nei pressi di Zimone. La cresta principale è situata al confine tra la Provincia di Torino e quella di Biella; tra i cordoni morenici che la fiancheggiano in territorio Biellese scorrono alcuni corsi d'acqua i più rilevanti dei quali sono i torrenti Olobbia e Viona, entrambi tributari del torrente Elvo.
Al momento della stesura di questo listing (luglio 2016) si sta costituendo il "Parco geologico dell’Anfiteatro Morenico di Ivrea" che potrà candidare il sito al programma "UNESCO Global Geoparks".

Per loggare l'EarthCache dovrete visitare i tre waypoint e rispondere alle domande inviandomi una email o un messaggio sul sito geocahing.com. In prossimità di ogni waypoint c'è parcheggio. La difficoltà elevata è dovuta alla lunga distanza da percorrere tra il WP1 e i successivi. Questa distanza è pari a circa la metà della lunghezza complessiva della Serra. Mentre nello spostarvi dal WP2 al WP3 attraverserete varie creste che compongono la morena (in questo tratto in particolare sono cinque, di cui tre ben evidenti).

La Serra (whose full name is Serra Morenica di Ivrea) is a glacial moraine relief generated by the nine major glaciations that continued over the last 900,000 years. It belongs to the vast complex of the Anfiteatro Morenico di Ivrea, which represents the lateral moraine left, i.e. the hilly complex that marks the maximum expansion of the glacier from the Val d'Aosta that flowed in the Po Valley during several glaciations. The glacier during the various ice ages has reached a length of over 100 km and a height of about 800 meters. For the size of the glacier that created the Anfiteatro Morenico di Ivrea is the largest formation of the kind existing in Europe and probably the world.
The Serra extends from the territory of Andrate (near Turin) to the gates of Cavaglià (province of Biella). Geographically it originates from the southern slopes of Mombarone (2,371 m) and goes with almost straight line with direction south-east for 20 km to the hills surrounding the Viverone lake. It consists of a series of evident parallel ridges produced by the various glacial pulsations.
The highest crest of the Serra reaches a maximum height of 600 meters to the inland plain moraine amphitheater in Andrate. This height reduced gradually reaching 250 meters near Zimone. The main ridge is situated on the border between the Province of Turin and Biella; between moraine ridges that flank in the Biella territory flowing some rivers, the most important are Olobbia and Viona, both tributaries of the river Elvo.
At the time of writing this listing (July 2016) is being established the "Geological Park of the Anfiteatro Morenico di Ivrea" that will nominate the site in the "UNESCO Global Geoparks."

To log the EarthCache you'll have to visit the three waypoints and answer the questions by sending at the owner an email or a message on geocahing.com site. Parking is available on each waypoint. The high difficulty value is due to the long distance between the WP1 and the next WP2 and WP3. This distance is equal to about half of the overall length of the Serra. While moving from WP2 to WP3 you will cross several ridges of the moraine (in this section in particular are five, three of which are clearly noticeable).
