This is a sacred place. Archaeologists working in this area recovered the graves of 117 individuals belonging to an ancient culture that we call Maritime Archaic. They lived at Port au Choix about 4,000 years ago. A number of grave goods were buried with these people to accompany them to the afterlife. One of the most provocative is a stone effigy of a killer whale, which was found resting on the chest of one individual. Researchers believe that the effigy may have been a sacred object and that the individual it was buried with may have been a spiritual leader.
