You are taking in the best available view of the Red Bay Basque Whaling Station, looking over the Strait of Belle Isle where the whales were hunted You can see all areas where whale oil was produced. The harbour is well-sheltered, but sometimes northerly winds wreak havoc. In the fall of 1565 the whaler San Juan was blown ashore on Saddle Island. The same thing happened to the Bernier, the steel hull that you can see in the distance, 401 years later.
