[ITA] ORNAVASSO
Ornavasso è un paese di poco più di 3.000 abitanti nella provincia del Verbano Cusio Ossola, posto a 215 metri sul livello del mare, uno dei primi borghi che s'incontrano risalendo il Toce, dopo Gravellona Toce. Il toponimo, in qualche documento antico riportato nella forma "Ornavaxio", deriva direttamente dal tedesco Urnafasch, termine col quale le popolazioni Walser hanno da sempre indicato questa località.
Nel 1891 vennero rinvenute nelle località di In Persona e San Bernardo due importanti necropoli la cui datazione si fa risalire tra il II secolo a.C. e il I secolo d.C.. In circa trecento tombe vennero rinvenuti ricchi corredi funebri appartenuti ai Leponzi, popolo di origine ligure e celtica.
Dal 962 fu dominio dei signori di Crusinallo e attraverso i Barbavara loro discendenti, nel 1379 fu venduta ai Visconti che divennero così padroni di tutta la valle. Sempre intorno al 1300 sulla montagna di Ornavasso si insediarono gruppi di coloni walser provenienti dalla regione del Sempione, che si spostarono poi verso il basso bonificando la pianura dove sorge oggi il paese. La presenza dei Walser crebbe fino a prevalere sulla popolazione romanza autoctona e Ornavasso divenne un'isola linguistica tedesca. La lingua vallesana iniziò però a scomparire verso la fine del 1800 della quale oggi sopravvivono solamente alcuni toponimi e termini nel dialetto locale.
Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, Ornavasso prese attivamente parte nella lotta di liberazione del Paese e vide la nascita della formazione partigiana Divisione Valtoce, dal caratteristico fazzoletto azzurro.

Ornavasso is a town of just over 3,000 inhabitants in the province of Verbano Cusio Ossola. It is located at 215 meters above sea level and it is one of the first towns met after Gravellona Toce, when heading upstream the river Toce. Its name was reported in some ancient document as "Ornavaxio", but it actually derives directly from the German Urnafasch, a term with which Walser people have always referred to this area.
In 1891, two important burial grounds were discovered in two locations, In Persona and San Bernardo, whose dating goes back to between the 2nd century BC and the 1st century AD. A rich array of grave goods was found in about 300 tombs belonging to the Lepontii, a people of Celtic and Ligurian origin.
From 962, Ornavasso was ruled by the lords of Crusinallo and in 1379 their descendants, the Barbavara family, sold it to the Visconti, who thus became rulers of the entire valley. Also around 1300, groups of Walser settlers from the Simplon region settled on the mountain of Ornavasso and then moved downwards, reclaiming the plain where the town stands today. The Walser presence in the area grew to prevail over the native Romance population and Ornavasso became a German-speaking language island. However, this language originally from Valais began to disappear towards the end of the 1800s and only a few place names and words used in the local dialect survive these day.
During the Second World War, Ornavasso took an active part in the Italian Liberation War and saw the birth of the partisan unit Divisione Valtoce with its characteristic blue handkerchief.
