Geocache Description:

Cache is located at the home of Grand Island’s ORIGINAL Superstore, Skagway. Skagway operated in Grand Island for 76 years before the family retired and the property was sold.  The original cache was removed during the demolition of Skagway and I recently was able to replace it with this one in keeping with the spirit of the original.

Above Image:  Original Skagway signage - day and night

One of my personal memories is of watching the old sign flash as we would drive past. Each letter would pop on one at a time S-K-A-G-W-A-Y until they were all lit up, then it would flash twice before starting over. The crazy things we remember from childhood.....

SKAGWAY HISTORY:  (credit GI Independent)

In 1939 George W. Martin purchased the O.P. Skaggs stores, which had been named after Oscar Pepper Skaggs. The original store was located at 417 W. Third.

In 1959 George Martin announced that a new Skagway would be built in the Five Points area, at that time a fairly remote part of the city.

In 2015 the property was sold to B&R Stores of Lincoln and they built a new SuperSaver at this location which had become an integral part of the "5 Points" Grand Island community.

You are looking for a magnetic hide-a-key tucked away from the common parking area in order to avoid muggles, but keep watch anyway! Oh, and don't forget to bring your writing utensil with you...no room for one here!

(Congratulations to LostLuna for getting the First To Find on the original cache, North to Alaska, GC4KH37)

Congratulations to Toot and Friend for getting the First To Find on the new cache!
