Geocache Description:

Visit the exact location where, on July 31, 1844, Robert Barnwell Rhett gave a speech in favor of South Carolina seceding from the Union. It took 16 more years before Rhett  and the other southern "fire-eaters" could convince the rest of the south to follow their lead and form The Confederate States of America. The Civil War began soon after. 172 years ago, this beautiful tree was big enough to be the focal point of an important local meeting and quite possibly was 172 years old at that time making it nearly 350 years old.  Read first page in log book!
