Boat Rock is a small urban boulderfield and nature preserve located in southwest Atlanta, Georgia. Boat Rock is known throughout the climbing world for it's world class bouldering, and held one of the first bouldering competitions in the U.S. in 1985. The names of climbing legends like Robyn Ebersfield, Ron Kauk, Bob Cormany and many other ring throughout the nearly mile long stretch of granite boulders.
Perhaps more importantly, Boat Rock is a inspiring story of how ordinary citizens banded together to protect a beautiful wilderness area from surburban sprawl. Unfortunately, 70% of the original Boat Rock area had been lost to delvelopers before a group of climbers were able to raise enough money to purchase a forested tract along Boat Rock Road when it came up for sale. In 2005 a local climber donated another 4.5 acres to help with expanding the park. In January of 2007, the Southeastern Climbers Coalition (SCC) raised the final funds to pay off the mortgage on the land and Boat Rock is debt free. In Feb 2007 the SCC opened the Woods Hill sector via a lease. SCC continues manage the preserve and relies on contributions foe the money to maintain and upkeep the area.
