About the Hoppet
The Kangaroo Hoppet is Australia's premier long distance cross country ski race, and a member of the prestigious Worldloppet series of international cross country ski events. Worldloppet is a union of the most famous cross country ski races in the world attracting over 50,000 skiers annually. Worldloppet races are held each year in Austria, Italy, Germany, Japan, Canada, USA, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Norway, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Russia and Australia.
Worldloppet aims to bring together cross country skiers of all nationalities, ages and abilities, to share their common love of skiing, to renew old acquaintances, and to create new friendships. Whether you take two hours or eight hours, the Kangaroo Hoppet provides a unique opportunity to ski the Bogong High Plains of Victoria's Alpine National Park on a well-groomed trail with six food stations. For those who do not feel up to the challenge of the 42km event, there are the shorter 21km Australian Birkebeiner and 7km Joey Hoppet events starting shortly after the main event.
The week leading up to the Kangaroo Hoppet provides a feast of skiing at Falls Creek, together with a host of social and festive activities in Falls Creek and the nearby sub-alpine town of Mount Beauty. Hoppet week has a range of social and sporting activities leading up to the race itself on the fourth Saturday of August.
Falls Creek Cross Country Skiing
Falls Creek is known as the home of Australian Cross Country Skiing for good reason. Not only is it home base for the Australian National Team but it also has one of the most expansive trail networks of any resort in the country. Through 65km of groomed trails you can gain access to corners of the Bogong High Plains rarely seen by most visitors. Take in breathtaking panoramic views across the vast plains, deep valleys, snowy mountains and majestic Rocky Valley Lake. This is the pristine High Country at its best.
Since removing trail fees in 2011 Cross Country has exploded in popularity as more and more visitors 'go Nordic' for the first time. As a fun, safe and easy to learn activity, XC is something the whole family can try together. You don't need a lift pass to get on the trails so cross country is an excellent way to experience the snow on a budget. A purpose-built instruction and training area is also on hand so learning is more accessible than ever.
Randolph does not expect you to travel to Falls Creek to collect the cache, but there is a bit of a puzzle to show you know a little about the mountain.
