Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Robberg ( Seal Mountain ) Nature Reserve just outside Plettenberg Bay.

The Robberg peninsula is an area of outstanding beauty / significance and is home to:

- The Nelson Bay Cave ( Wagenaar’s cave ) which is a Middle / Late Stone Age site whose first inhabitants date back 120,000 years.

- The first recorded European habitation in South Africa in 1630 when the survivors of the Portuguese vessel the Sao Goncalo camped here for 9 months.

- Geology of the early Cretaceous period dating back 110-130 million years.

- A colony of Cape Fur Seals ( since the early 1990’s ).

- The Western Cape’s smallest antelope, the blue duiker.

- Ocean wildlife which includes dolphins ( humpback and bottlenose), whales ( Southern Right, Humpback and Bryde’s), reef fish ( including the sex changing Roman ).

- The Cape Seal lighthouse ( the highest navigational light on the South African coast whose beam has a range of 27 kms ).

- Fauna and Flora associated with the Cape Floral Region which is one of South Africa’s eight World Heritage sites.

- The Witsand sand dune which is one of seven “climbing-falling” dunes on the Cape Coast.

It is no wonder then that in December 2014 Plettenberg Bay became one of the first five of South Africa’s International Hope Spots. A Hope Spot is part of a global network of identified marine areas, promoted and driven by the global initiative, Mission Blue.

Enjoy all the Reserve has to offer by taking one of three circular walks around the reserve:

1. Walk to The Gap and back to the car park, round about 2km.

2. Walk to The Witsand sand dune and down to The Island and back round about 4km.

3. The round trip via The Point is 11km and takes four hours or more. Not recommended for young children.

To reach this cache you will need to undertake either walk 2 or 3. So Enjoy yourselves and remember - take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints !

Park in the designated car park ( see coordinates below ) which is reached after one has driven past the official entrance to the Reserve.

There is an entrance fee ( 2016 prices – R 40/Adults + R 20/kids ) – check http://www.capenature.co.za/reserves/robberg-nature-reserve/ for current prices / opening times etc. Wild Card holders can enter without charge !

The cache container is quite a reasonable size sufficient to hold plenty of trackables and exchange items. There is a logbook with pencil and sharpener which should not be removed.

Plse bear in mind that this island is the Gull's breeding territory so respect their territory and take care not to disturb their nests.
