Geocache Description:

To mark finding my first 100 geocaches I've decided to hide my first one. Here you have the opportunity to walk the trails in Whitespots Country Park. There is ample parking near GZ.

Explore the paths and trails around this former mining area. There are attractive woodlands, heath and grassy areas as well as great views. Look out for kestrels hovering above, hunting for small animals.

Whitespots lead mine was Ulster's most important metal mine in the mid 1800s. At its peak 400 people worked here and thousands of tons of lead ore were removed from the ground. But by 1900 the mine was abandoned and nature has gradually reclaimed the land. Now Whitespots is an Area of Special Scientific Interest, famous for its geology and wildlife.

Travel back in time to the 1850s. Whitespots lead mine is a busy industrial site. Smoke pours out of chimneys while beam engines and the windmill drive machinery.

Below ground, it's dark and dangerous with miles of tunnels linked by deep shafts. Miners work by candlelight using picks and shovels to find lead ore.

The cache is a small camouflaged tab lock box containing a log and a few swaps. There is no pen so please bring your own. This is a popular muggle area for walkers, joggers and dog walkers so please use stealth. Also please return the cache to where you found it.
