Butler Head Preserve is a 141 acre woodland site on Merrymeeting Bay. In 1714 William Butler Sr, bought 350 acres on Butler Cove. He built a house and later a tavern. As shipping increased in Bath, imports such as rum, were commonplace.
One can almost picture sailors, full of rum, falling off their ships, and washing ashore at places like Butler Head.. This series of caches is composed of the "bones" of long ago sailors (maybe pirates) who met that sad fate.
