Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at the summit of Brandywine Mountain. One of the more visible mountains in Callaghan Country and one of the Whistler area's most underrated hikes.

You have two official trailheads to choose from for the hike to Brandywine Meadows (where the easy scramble route up the mountain begins). 4x4 is required to reach both. Nothing less than a truck, high clearance SUV or jeep is recommended for the road to the upper trailhead (lesser 4x4s may make it but will surely take one hell of a beating). 2wd vehicles can drive Brandywine FSR to the intersection of the roads to the lower and upper trailheads and perhaps a little bit farther down the road to the lower, which is frequently cited as the "2wd accessible" trailhead, but in reality, to call it such is a major stretch. The aforementioned intersection would much more accurately be called the 2wd trailhead.

Should you choose the lower trailhead, you will have a steep hike through forest alongside Brandywine Creek, gaining over 500m of elevation en route to the meadows. Driving to the upper trailhead will cut off 365m of elevation gain and allow for a very easy walk to the meadows. Needless to say the upper trailhead is most definitely the recommended approach so long as you have the vehicle necessary to reach it.

From the upper trailhead, a well beaten, almost road-like trail brings you to the meadows in little time with only gradual elevation gain. Hike to near the back of the meadows, look for some cairns and faint trails leading up the side of the valley to the left and make your way up the rocky slopes to the crest of the ridge.

Upon reaching the ridge, the route to the summit is very straightforward with well defined paths much of the way and plenty of cairns, not to mention very few options for going off-route! Also not much in the way of actual scrambling either, just steep boulder hopping at most.

Be sure to check out Matt Gunn's book Scrambles in Southwest BC for a more detailed route description of this mountain.

Best of luck!
