Geocache Description:

The coordinates will take you to Stage 1 of this two stage multi, a restoration of one of two charcoal pit kilns on Salt Spring Island in what is now Mouat Park. Both kilns were built in the early years of the 20th century by Isaburo Tasaka, a Japanese pioneer who immigrated to North America, and  moved with his family from Steveston to Salt Spring Island in 1905. Restoration of the site was completed in 2015. Restoration of the second (smaller) kiln is not yet scheduled.

Restoration of the site, long hidden under the natural debris of the forest, was carried out by the Japanese Garden Club and Salt Spring PARC, the Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission, with assistance from several individuals and organisations named on the signs.

At Stage 1,  you will need to examine two of the three signs, and do some simple math to learn the distance and direction from the Stage 1 coordinates to the final at Stage 2.

Direction (heading): The sign with a diagram of the kiln has five numbers on it, four of them referring to temperature. Subtract  480 from the smallest of the four. The result is the heading (in degrees from true north).

Distance: How many kilns of this type were built on Galiano Island? How many were built on Mayne Island?  Add these two numbers. The result is the distance (in metres) to the cache container location.

Caution: This is a high muggle area. You’re sharing this busy part of the park with dog walkers, strollers, and disc golf players. Watch for flying discs!

You should not need to move rocks, vegetation or other materials to find and recover the small (60 mL — BYOP) cache container. Please re hide as found.
