Santa María del Naranco es un monumento del siglo IX del prerrománico asturiano que se encuentra en el monte Naranco, al norte de Oviedo. Está aproximadamente a 30 minutos del centro de Oviedo andando, y a 15 minutos en coche. También se puede llegar hasta aquí cogiendo el autobús (con la línea A2 -Prerrománico). Se encuentra próximo a otro monumento muy famoso en la ciudad, San Miguel de Lillo.
Santa María del Naranco, al igual que San Miguel de Lillo, y San Julián de Prados (en Oviedo) se encuentran en la lista de la Unesco desde finales del siglo pasado por ser representantes del arte del prerrománico asturiano.
El rey Ramiro I, sucesor de Alfonso II el Casto, ordenó su construcción originalmente como Aula Regia (nombre que recibía la sala de recepciones o sala del trono) y que fue terminada de construir en el 842 d.C, formando parte del conjunto palacial. Más adelante, se piensa que entorno al siglo XII, pasó a ser una iglesia.
Tiene una triple arquería muy representada en Asturias. Se conserva como originalmente fue construida, salvo por algunas modificaciones que tuvieron lugar durante el período gótico. También fue restaurada entre 1929 y 1934 por L.Menéndez Pidal.
Su planta tiene unas dimensiones de 21 metros de largo por 6 de ancho, con dos pisos y una altura de 9 metros. En su lado norte se encuentra una escalera por la que se puede acceder a la parte superior del edificio. Allí hay un espacio diáfano (que permite pasar la luz), y en la inferior una cripta.
Este templo, también ha salido en algunas obras cinematográficas, como puede ser la película del director estadounidense Woody Allen (quien tiene una estatua en la calle Uría en el centro de Oviedo); Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
Recomendamos visitar este monumento en persona debido a su importancia para Asturias. Se puede visitar por fuera todos los días, incluso relajarse a la sombra de uno de los árboles que envuelve al edificio. Sin embargo, también se puede entrar y verlo en su interior. Santa María del Naranco is a famous monument, built in IX century which is situated in the Naranco's mountain, in north of Oviedo. It takes around 30 minutes to walk there from the city center, and approximately 15 minutes by car. Also you can take a bus, the A2, which connects the city center with Naranco, and A1 in the opposite direction. In the Naranco, there is also located (200 metres far away) San Miguel de Lillo, the other monument built in the Asturian prerromanic style.
Santa Maria del Naranco, San Miguel de Lillo and San Julián de los Prados (in Oviedo) are inscribed on the UNESCO list since the end of the last century.
The church was firstly constructed as Aula Regia (the Throne Room) by king Ramiro I, successor of Alfonso II el Casto and was finally finished in the 842 a.C. Later, approximately in the XII century, it was transformed into a church.
It has two floors. At the lower level there is a crypt, and at the upper floor there is the noble hall, with the famous triple-arch-shaped windows. very typical for the region of Asturias. The building went through some modifications during the era of gothic art. Its ground has 20 meters of lenght and 10 meters width.
This building has also appeared in some movies, like Vicky Cristina Barcelona, film shot by Woody Allen. (There is a statue of this director in the Uría Street in the center of the city).
You can visit the surroundings of this building and enjoy a nice view to the city or take a rest in the shadow under the tree. You can admire the beauty of the church from the outside for free, nevertheless we recommend to enter to the monument, its schedule is:
