Geocache Description:

Ilovik is a gorgeous small island off a bigger island called Losinj. It is worth visiting any time. The cache is located next to the excavation site of an ancient church, around 30-40 minutes on foot from the port of Ilovik. It is a pleasant walk along the shoreline, then up a hill following a marked path for the last 200-300 meters. If you are coming by boat, you may anchor in a nice little bay at the bottom of the hill.

Ilovik ist eine wunderschöne kleine Insel vor Losinj und ist 2-4x täglich per Fähre vom Ende von Losinj erreichbar. Der Cache ist im Bereich der Ausgrabungsstätte einer alten römischen Andreas-Kirche. Vom Ort aus ist diese in 30-40 Minuten zu Fuß erreichbar (Ilovik ist autolos!). Der Weg führt entlang der Küste und dann entlang eines markierten Wegs für ein paar hundert Meter bergauf in den Wald. =========================================================

At the foot of the ruins in Vela Straža, to the northwest at the site of Sućadrija (Sut Jadrij - Sv. Andrija - St. Andrew), above the bay with the similar name, are visible traces of the apse and perimetric walls of the early Christian church of St. Andrew. The knowledge of existence of this church was present for a long time, but only recently a large pile of stones was removed from its remains. Horseshoe shape of the apse of the church refers to the Byzantine construction influence, while discovered fragments of an Antique stone inscription and Roman roof tiles (tegulae) which covered it were apparently removed from a nearby Roman building. The church was thoroughly looted and burned down probably in the 12th century.
